Google review extortion: what to do if someone demands payment

First come the one-star reviews. Then a message offers to make them disappear—for a payment. If this is happening to your business, preserve the message before doing anything else. Google has a dedicated reporting route for review extortion, and the connection between that demand and the reviews is the important part to document.

ReviewAppeals guide · Sources checked

The demand and the reviews belong in the same evidence trail.

The first three moves

01 · Preserve

Save the whole conversation.

Capture the sender, dates and demand, along with any review links the sender identifies. Keep the original messages too.

02 · Do not pay

Do not bargain over the ratings.

Google advises against paying or engaging with the people making the demand. Preserve further contact without offering money or services.

03 · Report

Use the dedicated extortion route.

Google’s guidance links to its merchant extortion form. Connect the demand to the affected reviews in your report.

Use the route that matches the incident

Google’s extortion channel is for direct demands for money or favors in exchange for removing reviews. A sudden run of low ratings with no demand needs a different assessment. An unsolicited offer from a removal company is not, by itself, proof that the sender posted the reviews.

Preserve the link between sender, demand and review

  • Original emails or messages and screenshots showing the demand and sender.
  • The first contact time and a timeline of subsequent messages.
  • Links to your Business Profile and the reviews associated with the threat.
  • Any statement by the sender identifying the reviews or promising to remove them for payment.

Keep original records. Share only what is relevant, and avoid putting private customer or staff information into a public reply.

Report the incident through the right channel

These steps explain the platform’s published process. Reporting is available without paying for our service.

  1. Preserve the incident evidence before messages or accounts disappear.
  2. Open Google’s extortion guidance below and use its merchant extortion report form. Explain how the demand relates to the listed reviews.
  3. Save the submission details, monitor communications from Google, and keep a record of further threats or reviews for any requested follow-up.

Why the message can matter more than the wording

Nobody picked up the phone and the delivery never arrived.

The complaint alone does not reveal extortion. If a separate message identifies that review and demands payment to remove it, the message supplies important additional evidence. The assessment must consider both, rather than judging the review text in isolation.

Bring the case to a specialist

We look at the connection between the demand, the sender, and the reviews. This helps distinguish a documented extortion incident from a suspicious pattern with no established link. Include the fact that a demand was made in your free assessment request; we will explain what evidence is useful next.
